Pop3 is a way of communication between a desktop mail client (Outlook Express for example) and a mail server (Yahoo!). The standard free Yahoo! service doesn't include Pop3, so you can't read your mail in a desktop apllication lik Outlook Express. You can only view it online in a browser like Internet Explorer or Firefox.
SMTP is also a way of communication, but this is only for sending E-mail with an application (also not included in the free version, only online).
You will have to pay for Yahoo! premium to get Pop3 or SMTP.
