GMail uses both POP3 and IMAP
POP3 is Post Office Protocol
IMAP is Internet Message Access Protocol
They are both similar in the way they work, but IMAP will allow you to use a program such as Office Outlook to retrieve your email in a mirrored environment. Any mail that you delete from one side, will be deleted on the other, instantly. Its like a two way radio of sorts.
Delete from program -%26gt; MSG deleted from gmail
Delete from GMail -%26gt; MSG delete from program
IMAP allows basically for your inbox on an internet interface to be mirrored to a third party application such as outlook express, or Mozilla Thunderbird.
WHAT IS POP3 IN EMAIL ? IS THIS WHAT GMAIL USES?
It's a protocol to access the e-mail servers.

And I have no idea what G-mail uses.
